It was during the last Grand Marian Procession in Intramuros when I first saw the image of Mama Mary depicted as child. The image of the young Blessed Mother is called La Niña Maria.
Dr. Alejandro Roces explains that “religious statuaries are not naturalistic portraits of Christ, the Virgin Mary and the saints. The theory has been that Virgin Mary must have looked like Christ. Jesus had no earthly father. His physical characteristics could only have come from His Mother. Therefore, their resemblance must have been identical.”
Perhaps this confirms my impression when I first saw the image of La Niña Maria that I mistakenly identified to be the Sto. Niño or the Holy Infant Jesus until I have read the inscription that revealed Her title as the young Mama Mary.
Today, the Catholic community celebrates September 8 as the nativity of the Blessed Mother of Christ.
